A New Year for a New Contract

Originally posted: January 2, 2024

Next month (February 1st), sworn members will FINALLY be able to use their Green Shield benefits to access Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs) as mental health service providers. Plus, we now have $5000 per year to support us and our dependents. That’s a big win, thanks VPU.

A good place to start to look for occupationally aware RCCs is the First Responder Health website, which was developed by a first responder for first responders. The therapists on their website have taken a course (or three courses) to be :Certified as First Responder aware/educated – Bronze, Silver, Gold.” Both Dr. Duncan Shields and Dr. David Kuhl teach those courses, so I trust this website.

You can use a map on their website to find an occupationally aware RCC or use the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors search engine.

While both RCCs and psychologists can provide great therapy, ONLY psychologists can make a diagnosis (anxiety, depression, PTSD, etc.), which may help if the diagnosis is related to work issues.

  • Research a therapist that is a good fit for you!
  • Google them, go to their website, etc., look at their photos
  • Consider virtual appointments: more therapists to choose from, no travel time, no parking issues, from your computer/phone anywhere you want, when you want
  • Call and leave a message highlighting why you are calling – they are likely in a session
  • Get your questions lined up for when they call back:
    • Are you registered in BC as a RCC or a psychologist?
    • How much do you charge?
    • Are your appointments virtual or in person?
    • Do you see clients after 5 pm? (if that is important)
    • Do you direct bill? (if that is important)
    • What is your earliest appointment?  And then book it – even if it is a few months away!
  • It’s all about the relationship you develop, so if you are not clicking, find a new therapist!
