You Learn Something New Every Day

Today, with the help of a brand-new recruit, on day one of his policing career, I pieced something together that I just hadn’t fully thought through before. They advised that registered clinical counselors (RCCs) cannot formally diagnose mental health conditions.

I believe that is one of the reasons why psychologists are accepted therapists, according to our union contract. A diagnosis can help us start to understand the complexity of our own mental health and, more importantly, get us access to resources and supports.

According to the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, RCCs can assess and treat mental health conditions, “but they do not diagnose or prescribe. Clinical counselling is a partnership between RCC and clients, who work together to reach agreed upon goals and outcomes.”

If you are connected to a good RCC and they are helping you chip away at stuff, fantastic! I am hopeful our next VPU contract will include RCCs as service providers and you will finally have your fees covered!

Regardless of whether you see an RCC or a psychologist, if you are feeling the same way about an issue you started talking a about years ago, consider finding a new therapist.

A therapeutic relationship is more than just talking — it provides support and challenges you, allowing you to gain valuable insights into yourself. Therapists are trained listeners who can help you find and navigate the issues that are holding you back.

Thanks, new guy. You helped teach this old dog a new trick.
