LOTS of People Talk to a Therapist

Originally posted: August 8, 2023

Seriously, everyone is affected by occupational stress to some degree.

Plus, life gets complex. Chip away at your stuff — you’ll be a happier, healthier parent, partner, friend, colleague, or … boss.

  • Research a therapist that is a good fit for you! Google them, go to their website, etc., look at their photos.
  • Tell them you work for the VPD and tell them a little bit about what you are going through, to give context.
  • Consider virtual appointments — more therapists to choose from, no travel time, no parking issues, from your phone anywhere you want. An alert and engaged therapist can still pick up on emotions and body language.
  • Leave a message with a couple of details highlighting why you are calling, as they are likely in a session.
  • Get your questions lined up for when they call back:
    • How much do you charge?
    • Are your appointments virtual or in person?
    • Do you see clients after 5 p.m.? (if that is important)
    • Do you direct bill ? (if that is important)
    • What is your earliest appointment? And then book it — even if it is a few months away!

It’s all about the relationship you develop, so if you are not clicking, find a new therapist.
